When should I apply for FSSAI licence renewal?

Under Regulation 2.1.6(1) of FSS (L&R) Regulations 2011, the renewal application must be filed **not later than 30 days prior to the date of expiry** of the licence / registration. What happens if I miss the 30-day pre-expiry window?

You can still file the renewal application **within 30 days after expiry** with a late fee of **₹100 per day for each day of delay** (Regulation 2.1.6[4]). Beyond 30 days after expiry, the licence is deemed lapsed and you must file a fresh Form A / Form B application with a new licence number.

Can I renew my FSSAI licence for more than 1 year?

Yes - Regulation 2.1.6(2) allows renewal for **1, 2, 3, 4, or 5 years** at the FBO's option. The total renewal fee = annual fee × number of years. I-Pro recommends 5-year renewal to lock in the current fee structure and avoid annual renewal hassle.

Does renewal require a fresh physical inspection?

For Basic Registration (Form A) - typically no inspection. For State / Central Licence - inspection may be conducted at the Designated Officer's discretion; routine renewals with no change in capacity / category / premises are usually renewed without inspection, but renewals involving capacity / category changes trigger inspection.

Will my licence number change on renewal?

No - the 14-digit licence / registration number remains the same on renewal; only the expiry date is extended. However, if the licence has lapsed (filed after 30 days post-expiry), the FBO must file a fresh application and will get a new licence number.

Can I renew my FSSAI licence if I have shifted my premises?

No - change of premises is not permitted by renewal alone. You must file a **Form B modification application** (Regulation 2.1.7) for change of premises; the modified licence will reflect the new premises address. If the new premises is in a different State, the licence category may also change (e.g., State → Central or vice versa).

Can I renew my licence if I have not filed Form D1 annual returns?

Designated Officers may withhold renewal pending filing of pending Form D1 returns. It is advisable to file all pending Form D1 returns (with applicable late fee of ₹100 per day) before submitting the renewal application to avoid rejection.

What is the penalty for operating after licence expiry without renewal?

Operating a food business after expiry without renewal is operating without a valid licence - penalty under s.59 FSS Act 2006 (imprisonment up to 6 months + fine up to ₹5 lakh). Additionally, any food sold during the unlicensed period is liable to seizure under s.36, and the FBO can be prosecuted under s.38.
