Is DGFT DSC different from a regular Class-3 DSC?

The DGFT DSC is a Class-3 DSC with an additional DGFT-specific OID (Object Identifier) embedded in the certificate extensions by the issuing CA, indicating the subscriber is the authorised signatory of an IEC holder. Functionally it is identical to a Class-3 DSC, but DGFT portal accepts only DSCs that carry this OID for IEC-holder filings.

Is DGFT DSC mandatory for IEC application?

For companies, LLPs, partnerships - yes, DSC is mandatory for IEC application and modification. For proprietorship - Aadhaar e-Sign is accepted as an alternative since the 2021 DGFT portal revamp (DGFT Circular dated 6 January 2021).

Can I use the same DSC for DGFT and MCA filings?

A DGFT DSC is also valid for MCA / GST / Income-tax / e-tender portals - the DGFT OID is additive, not restrictive. However, a plain Class-3 DSC without the DGFT OID will NOT be accepted by DGFT portal for IEC-holder filings.

What is the validity of a DGFT DSC?

1 / 2 / 3 years per CCA guidelines (same as Class-3 DSC). Renewal before expiry requires fresh e-KYC and fresh key pair. After expiry, fresh application is required (no renewal).

Can a CHA (Customs House Agent) use the exporter's DGFT DSC?

Yes, if the exporter has authorised the CHA by Board Resolution and mapped the CHA's DSC to the exporter's IEC holder account on DGFT portal. Alternatively, the CHA can use their own DGFT DSC mapped to multiple IEC holders' accounts.

What happens if I file a DGFT modification with an expired DSC?

DGFT portal rejects the filing at the signer (no condonation). The modification must be re-filed with a valid renewed DSC. Persistent use of an expired DSC may trigger DGFT scrutiny of the IEC holder.

Can I switch CAs at the time of renewal?

Yes - the DGFT DSC is interoperable across CCA-licensed CAs. At renewal, you can switch from eMudhra to n-Code or vice versa; the new DSC must be re-mapped to the IEC holder's account on DGFT portal (the old DSC is automatically de-mapped on expiry).

Is DGFT DSC accepted by Customs (ICEGATE) for shipping bills?

DGFT DSC is accepted by DGFT portal. For ICEGATE (Indian Customs EDI System) shipping bills / Bills of Entry, a separate mapping on ICEGATE portal is required - DGFT DSC is interoperable on ICEGATE but must be registered on the ICEGATE portal under the IEC holder's account.
